Development of a low-cost mini fluorometer for chlorophyll detection in laboratory samples

Abstract

Effective marine monitoring is crucial for safeguarding aquatic eco- systems and ensuring human health by detecting and managing pollution and other environmental changes. The use of low-cost sensors and their replicability are essential for monitoring marine environments, where sensor immersion can be challenging due to phenomena such as fouling. This study presents the development of a low-cost mini fluorometer with a ring-shaped arrangement of components, allowing samples to be housed within and providing flexibility for multiparametric use. This prototype features various LEDs, filters to reduce noise and detectors, including the AS7341 for visible and infrared light, and the AS7263 for the 610-860 nm range. Managed by an Arduino Nano Every microcontroller, the sensor records fluorescence data from chlorophyll samples. Tests confirm its ability to detect chlorophyll in different samples and concentrations, using Mar Menor water filtered as solvent.
