Abstract

The mixture of an ownership culture, a limited rental market and high housing prices all leads towards a delay in the emancipation of young people in Spanish society, as highlighted by the 2002 report of the Economic and Social Council. In addition, this phenomenon can affect the patterns of civil status and the birth rate of a society, as well as its labour market. Centring upon the problem of emancipation, this is very much influenced by the restrictions imposed by the housing market.
