Resumen

Este estudo visa entender os projetos e a construção das grandes avenidas, introduzidas em planos urbanísticos no início do século XX, concebidas como geradoras de desenvolvimento e progresso para suas cidades. Tomando como ponto de partida a difusão do modelo Haussmanniano, em meados do século XIX, busca-se, através da análise mais detalhada das Avenidas Sete de Setembro, em Salvador - Bahia, Brasil, e La Palmera, em Sevilha, na Espanha, comparando-as também a outros exemplos espanhóis e brasileiros, entender como os governos utilizaram-se dos planos de reforma e expansão para resolver as questões de insalubridade, falta de higiene e péssimas condições de moradia nestas cidades, no período. Procura-se ainda perceber as transformações e os significados que a aberturas das avenidas e seus planos urbanísticos tiveram para sociedade e o contexto histórico-cultural em que os modelos utilizados foram implantados, sobretudo, por influência das classes dominantes e do governo nas cidades estudadas.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to understand the projects and the construction of great avenues, introduced in urban plans in the beginning of the 20th century, conceived as generators of development and progress for their cities. Taking as a starting point the diffusion of the Haussmannian model, in the middle of the 19th century, we seek, through a more detailed analysis of the Avenues Sete de Setembro, in Salvador - Bahia, Brazil, and La Palmera, in Seville, Spain, comparing them with other Spanish and Brazilian examples, to understand how the governments used the reform and expansion plans to solve problemas such as unhealthy issues, lack of hygiene and terrible conditions of permanence in cities. It also seeks to understand the transformations and meanings that the openings of theses avenues and their urban plans had for society and the historical-cultural context in which the models used were implemented, mainly due to the influence of the dominant classes and the government in the cities studied.
