Resumen

O artigo mostra as representações visuais das demolições no Recife, Pernambuco, Brasil, entre as décadas de 1930 e 1970, apresentando imagens produzidas pelo fotógrafo Benício Whatley Dias, nas quais se revelam as contradições da modernização em face da preservação do passado. Questiona-se a maneira com a qual as práticas progressistas —exemplificadas no arrasamento das estruturas urbanas coloniais, na abertura de grandes avenidas e na construção de arranha-céus no entorno de bens tombados— seriam referentes identitários da linguagem modernista. Observam-se, nas fotografias, a estrutura urbanística existente; a forma e função dos espaços abertos e dos edifícios; e os elementos de arquitetura e de composição característicos das linguagens morfológicas históricas.

ABSTRACT

The article shows the visual representations of the demolition in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, between the decades 1930 e 1970, introducing images produced by the photographer Benicio Whatley Dias, which are revealed the contradictions of the urban renovation facing the past conservation. It is asked the way in which the progresses practices —showed in the destruction of urban colonial structures, in the opening of large avenues and in the construction of skyscrapers in the surroundings of preserved heritage— would be reference to ideals identity of the modernist language. It is observed in the photography images, the ancient urban structure; the form and function of open spaces and bullrings; the architectural elements and the characteristic composition of the historic morphologic languages.
