Abstract

The recovery of the urban, architectural, and cultural memory of small patrimonial centres, suspended between the Spanish colonial heritage of the Leyes de Indias and the symbolic one of the Cuban Revolution, is the main objective of the project “OCSHC - Oriental Cuba Small Historical Centres: an integrated strategy for the intelligent recovery and enhancement of the minor historical centres of the eastern provinces of Cuba”. The project, funded by the AICS Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, was born from a joint initiative between the Oficina del Conservador de la Ciudad of Santiago de Cuba the Faculty of Construction of the Universidad de Oriente and the Department of Architecture of Roma Tre University. OCSHC provides for the definition of an integrated strategy for the construction of a network of small patrimonial towns in the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín y Guantánamo, within the framework of a sustainable and solidarity development scenario based on the recovery and enhancement of the historical heritage urban and the places of culture and local communities.

Author Biographies

Mario Cerasoli, University of Roma, La Sapienza

Architect, Doctor in Planning, he is Associate Professor in Urban Planning and full professor at the University of Rome, La Sapienza. He conducts research in the field of Urban Studies, focusing on the following topics: the relationships between urban planning, infrastructure and mobility; the dynamics of the peripheries of large urban areas; the recovery and valorization of minor historical centers and the opportunities offered by new technologies. He has coordinated several university research in Italy and has participated and participates in some national and international research groups. Since 2013 he has been a guest lecturer in the Master of Research in Urban Management and Valuation of the CPSV Center for Land Policy and Valuations of the UPC Polytechnic University of Catalonia. Between 2015 and 2017 he has coordinated the “Master Plan for the Recovery and Integration of the informal settlement of Branch A in the Mayor's Office of Zacatecoluca (Department of La Paz, El Salvador)”, within the framework of the project “Strengthening the Secretariat of Culture of the Presidency of El Salvador through the valorization of cultural heritage” (coordinator: Prof. Mario Micheli, Roma Tre University) funded by the AICS Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. Since 2015 he has been a member of the Academic Commission of the Doctoral Program in Urban and Architectural Management and Valuation of the UPC, where he has been an evaluator of research and thesis proposals and a member of several final panels. As of 2016, he is a member of the scientific committee of the postgraduate Master in Real Estate Finance at the LUISS Business School, LUISS “Guido Carli” University, where he is head of the Urbanism and Regional Planning Course. He has also given courses, talks, conferences and seminars at many universities in Europe (Italy, Spain, Holland, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom) and America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, Mexico and Uruguay).
