Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the influence of BMR’s employment polycentricity on population spatial structure and, specially, on its suburbanization. Using census tract data, I first estimate four population density functions in order to study CBD’s and employment subcenters influence on population spatial distribution in 1991 and 2006. Secondly, I estimate four population growth functions and four residential land growth functions in order to study their influence between 1991 and 2006. Results clearly show the increasing role of employment subcenters on location and residential land consumption choices of population, with more intense growths close to them, and the loss of influence of the center region, Barcelona, with higher growths far away from it.
