Abstract

The characteristics of the current metropolitan territory, resulting from the combination of intricate physical structure and a process of long and complex occupation, along with the prospects for future evolution of space requirements for residential and economic activity, have raised a number of challenges that are which primarily has to face the Territorial Planning of the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona. This article analyzes territorial development alternatives in order to assess the applicability of each of them to the reality of the metropolitan region of Barcelona and, above all, the advantages and disadvantages that would involve their people, its economy and environment. They are, therefore, physical occupation alternatives of the region that, beyond the specific provisions of the various elements, pose great territorial development models. Finally, the article concludes with consideration of the role of plan to guide territorial planning in the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona, understood as a multi-nodal, where in an environmental sustainability framework can develop regional policies that enable social cohesion and economic efficiency of the regional territory and Catalonia as a whole.
