Abstract

Public space along the River of Aveiro is the object of this research. The concept of public space along city canals is defined as a principle of its use and occupation. This principle has an attraction effect of the canal over the citizen. The research approaches the performance of public space, in terms of urbanity, minding the principles inherent to the heritage and landscape and the preservation of the identity of public space within the context of urban regeneration. The analysis is guided by two interdependent concepts: urbanity and the valorisation of urban water canals. By suggesting a correlation between the degree of urbanity in public spaces located on the margins of the canals and the degree of valorisation provided by the population, a link is established between the attributes of the special configuration of the canals and the protection of the surrounding public spaces, by means of urban rehabilitation.
