Interview with Kengo Kuma

In this interview, Kengo Kuma talks about his beginnings,his interests and his professional practice. Highlighting theworks of Bruno Taut and Frank Lloyd Wright as a bridgebetween modernism and traditional Japanese architecture,Kuma expresses his interest in the value of tradition withinthe contemporary scene. The influence of Ukiyo-e paintingsand the conception of architecture as part of the garden alsorepresent a strong background for his work, which focuseson the idea of lightness in seek for warmth and livability.Light and nature, time and movement, technology andmatter, research and teaching, they all appear as key conceptsin his architectural thinking. Aiming to connect art,philosophy and construction, Kuma advocates for the necessityto communicate ideas by means of materials. 6. The author or provider, exempts Palimpsesto magazine of all and any responsibility relating to violation of copyrights, thereby committing himself or herself to undertaking all efforts to assist Palimpsesto magazine in defence of any accusation, extra-judiciary, and/or judicial measures. Likewise, the author or provider will assume payment to Palimpsesto of any sum or compensation that must be paid to third parties for failure to comply with these obligations, be it the result of judicial, arbitrary or administrative decisions.
