Abstract

In the 30s while Madrid faces the process of redefining itsgrowth, the Gabinete Técnico de Accesos y Extrarradio de Madrid announces the tender for the construction of the newHippodrome.

The project by Arniches, Dominguez and Torroja is selected, being a small-scale proposal, well established in the topography, almost perfect functionally and formally, and relied on theneo-regionalist language currently in use. Between the proposaland the executed work, opened in 1934, there are majorundocumented differences.

In 2003 Junqueras Architects wins the competition for the rehabilitationof the Hippodrome and its conversion into a facilityfor the XXIst century. It is the beginning of a research work onthe project that could be, in constant dialogue with the authorsthat no longer exist and whose decisions, if today might arise, have to be guessed.
