Abstract

After the pacification of La Frontera, the military forts were the starting point for the new towns in Araucanía. These places were populated as a function of the provision of sites together with the implementation of communication and urbanisation routes provided by the Chilean state.

The gradual industrial and agricultural development associated with these first cities of Araucanía, together with the increase in population, led to the occupation of the areas immediately surrounding the original layout of the town. After the analysis of the first plans drawn up for the cities of Temuco and Nueva Imperial, we recognise the framework of a city project that defines and anticipates its form. In this sense, the cartography is analysed as a source of the project, from which the necessary actions for urban development are materialised.
