Urbanization of the southwest quadrant of the city of Londrina-PR. The impact of the Catuaí shopping center

Abstract

Residential segregation is currently an indisputable aspect of the capitalist city. This phenomenon consists of the degree of agglomeration of certain ethnic or social groups in a given area, generating a differentiated occupation in certain regions of the city. This is due to several factors such as, for example, real estate speculation, consumption of locational advantages or political interests. This was noticed in the city of Londrina, in the north of Paraná, mainly related to the implementation of Shopping Catuaí in the 1990s. Thus, this work aim the análisis of urban transformations resulting from the installation of Shopping Catuaí Londrina, in the southwest quadrant. of the city, focusing on the production of high-income residential dispersion and the resulting urban impacts. For this, mappings and analyzes were carried out from the photointerpretation of the urban form of Londrina, in the years 1991, 2006 and 2020. Presented an intense urbanization, with the excessive verticalization of the Gleba Palhano and the implantation of closed horizontal condominiums that fomented the urban dispersion in Londrina and the difficulty in maintaining an articulated and cohesive urban form
