Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, Recife became an unhealthy city according to hygienists, who claimed that diseases departed from the architecture of houses. Moment that implements both the remodeling of the existing city (referring to the founding neighborhoods of the city) and in the urban expansion through the new layouts. The research seeks the comparative study between the form and dimensions of the existing city with the city configured in the first half of the 20th century. The ordinances of 1936 and 1961 dictate the rules of the layout of the urban expansion of the city. The results obtained show that the streets, blocks and plots analyzed have dimensions that are closer to the rejected center than to the city idealized by hygienists. In addition, the orthogonal layout of the expansion keeps a homogeneity that does not exist in Recife, the layouts are configured by autonomous pieces, with urbanity differentiated from each other.
