Abstract

This article provides an analysis and reflection on changes in urban space in municipal housing districts to identify relevant aspects of urban and architectural design that could be rethought, to guarantee more flexibility of use and the quality of life of residents. To achieve this objective, this study focuses on four neighbourhoods in the municipality of Loures, in the district of Lisbon. The main informal appropriations in the external public space and in the building exteriors (e.g. configurational and/or chromatic changes of the facades) were mapped through in situ analyses and debate sessions with inhabitants and representatives of the Municipality of Loures. This comparative study aims to analyse informal urban dynamics as a means for contributing to the requalification of social housing and to the well-being of inhabitants, considering socioeconomic, architectural, and landscape characteristics of each case under analysis.
