Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to show how the quality of urban space remains, largely, depending on the degree of success achieved in the association between public and private. It presents the paradox of focusing on private interiors in order to understand better Barcelona’s public space. The paper is divided in three parts: The first one performs a chronological journey through private initiatives and projects that introduce a public dimension in the city. The second shows how certain public spaces can be read through the effect of interior spaces around them. The last part includes an analysis initiated through various urban regulations in order to examine the tools and coercive resources used to regulate aspects of buildings and plots that have an immediately and direct impact on the quality of urban public space.
