Abstract

The growing interest in incorporating citizen participation in urban planning together with its potential utility as an opportunity to face the increasing spacial complexity and new territorial challenges have led us to study and identify what are the environmental benefits that result from the instrumentalization of citizen participation in urban planning processes. First, we justify the strong relationship between urban planning processes and citizen participation. In addition to this, we find out the reason why citizen participation has to be considered as an operating element and core. Secondly, after trying out the previous ideas, we analyse the results of citizen participation in several Masterplans. Finally, after all the analysis mentioned above, we draw a set of conclusions regarding the environmental benefits identified, their limitations and opportunities.
