Abstract

Considering the idea expressed by several authors that the existence of open areas does not determine the vitality of a neighborhood, this article analyzes different spaces in two cities of the metropolitan area of Brasilia, planned according to the principles of International Style between 1958 and 1960, where public spaces became derelict and abandoned. The study focuses the spaces proposed following the 1933 Athens Charter, such as the vegetation zones isolating main roads from the urban fabric, the open spaces detaching the buildings, and residual areas in the inflexion of the grid. The research works with the hypothesis that the open spaces proposed by the International Style as the condition of a good urban form are converted into vacant areas because they have no use or value, due to its location near to the road system, as well as due to the absence of form and limits.
