Abstract

In order to enhance the sustainable development of metropolitan regions, we must pursue the value and protection of peri-urban open spaces as part of the land mosaic and as sites of encounter with nature of high social-use value. This article’s main focus is on the experiential knowledge in the new metropolitan leisure spaces through an innovative approach which incorporates the individual residents’ viewpoint. In order to accomplish this, we propose a diagnostic method based on geo-ethnographic analysis which enables us to identify the processes of appropriation of these spaces. Preliminary results obtained through two case studies in metropolitan regions, allows us to assess the emerging role of peri-urban open spaces as places of collective use with their own identity.
