Abstract

The text does an approach on the main gardens cultivated in Brazil over time, their typologies and authors. It also analyzes how some of these gardens were patrimonializated by federal preservation organ. Various form of designing gardens occurred in Brazil, more consistently from the second half of the nineteenth century, as happened in several cities around the world. In this sense, the gardens became part of a larger urban project, revealing a new relationship with public space and the ways of being and relating to the city. The article refers to two distinct time periods. Namely, the first was the projection and creation of gardens in Brazil with diverse authors and projects. The second is on the choice of some gardens to become part of the national heritage, notably between 1938 and 1950. In general, the text is about the art and history of the gardens in Brazil.
