Abstract

The City shape is made of the constant construction, reuse and overlap of a multiplicity of urban elements, creating over the long time an heterogeneous and multifaceted entity a dense cultural landscape defined by a complex sequence and overlaying constructed strata. Assuming the urban construction in the long time as an act of continuous production over pre-existing tissue that leaves its mark on subsequent structures that impose or adapt to it, the urban elements, created and subsequently reinterpreted at different times, reflect the influences and singularities characteristic of each culture that implanted and used them. It is thus possible to ascertain the morphological evolution of the city from the reading of the remains of its different stages. Thus the article aims, to understand how, through the use of a well-grounded methodology, based on several international studies, it is possible to contribute to the advancement of knowledge about the construction and morphological evolution of the Portuguese city, realizing and demonstrating the value of pre-existing urban elements through its continuous use in the production of the current form of the.
