Abstract

New forms of urban growth and the development of new transport and communications infrastructure have caused great urban transformations. Concepción's Metropolitan Area (CMA), Chile, has absorbed a vast territory with great diversity of natural geographic features of environmental, ecological and cultural quality exposed to considerable seismic activity, such as occurred on February 27, 2010; promoting the existence of a discontinuous urban fabric between urbanized areas and open spaces. The study aims to highlight how these open spaces constitute an important element of urban form and an essential element in the process of adaptation to a disaster. It presents a possibility of establishing a regional development project based on the recognition of the vacuum as a significant attribute of open space that can guide actions that lead to a more urban setting adaptable for AMC.
