Abstract

The coastline of the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, concentrating much of its population and its major cities, has experienced intense transformations in recent decades, from urban growth and tourism exploitation, most often affecting landscape, environment and the existing urban structures. This paper presents research that aims to make the reading of this process and thus contribute to the planning and management activities in the region. The proposed approach integrates variables that have been studied, as a rule, in isolation: natural ecosystems, preterit occupations, processes of urban growth and urban forms resulting. The paper presents the theoretical and methodological guiding the research and some of the empirical results, concluding with exposure of general guidelines for the implementation of a planning process to this unusual coastal area.
