Abstract

The study of urbanization "metropolitan" process envolves thinking about the incorporation of rural areas by urban areas and the consequents economic, social and territorial transformations. The research related to this article is interested in changes resulting from urban expansion into rural areas. We seek to characterize the development of urbanization in rural areas calls "metropolitanizadas" identifying, in time and space, the changes that occur in metropolitan areas and conurbations that integrate Macrometropolis Paulista. We hypothesized that there is gradual economic, territorial and functional complementarity between rural and urban areas in general. This article is an attempt to define a methodology for mapping used in the mentioned thesis. Seeks to identify and measure the dimensions of rural and urban in the defined Macrometropolis Paulista. Use concepts from researchers in the definition of these two "categories of the territory" of approaches adopted in Brazil, and parameters and definitions used by international agencies.
