Abstract

Environmental sustainability and land use must be understood as a single concept, applied to cities, ensures the success of planning in improving the quality of life. The middle-sized cities are the best opportunity for implementation. Environmental and cultural potential, along with the possibilities of their population size and its dimensions, constitute major advantages for implementation. Physical and environmental actions implemented by this type of cities in Colombia have made significant progress in the development of the road infrastructure and transport system, utilities, community facilities, open spaces and urban development transfers, conservation areas and protection; Construction of social housing and relocation of settlements in high risk areas, growth strategies and rearrangement priority development and construction as well as procedures and management tools. But it also presents situations of stagnation and setbacks that are challenges for improvement.
