Abstract

Destruction can define a territory and is part of the irreversible process of change that affects our cities and landscapes. All forms of disaster have helped to determine the way we shape our territories as well as leaving behind them a collective imagination of destruction and with time inspiring an aesthetic appreciation of these places. As a result, the representation of landscape destruction has come to play a major role, stimulating a new approach to observing and understanding this phenomenon. By analyzing various representations of different factors effecting landscapes, we will identify the way they have been represented as well as the strategies used. With this in mind, we suggest the creation of cartography of devastated landscapes, such as the Pacific coastline in Chile, which was affected by an earthquake in 2010. This will help to summaries the work required in order to define new related ideas and themes.
