Abstract

This paper presents an experimental analysis on the adaptative dimension of transport networks: its ability to adapt over time and to facilitate new urban relations and new mobility patterns. Frei Otto deduced a classification of road systems, which he explained in his study Occupying and Connecting (Otto, 2009). The magnitude of time now reformulates this classification, which was essentially geometrical. This approach, along with the available Open Data, lays the foundation of the parametric model that analyses the adaptability of the transport system in an urban explosion context. The analysis of the case study (Donostia-San Sebastián, a mid-size European city) shows several contradictions and challenges that mid-size cities face, and it suggests few guidelines in order to achieve a more efficient, effective and rational public transport network.
