Abstract

This dissertation studies the microdensification as a strategy to promote revitalization processes in neighborhoods that are currently facing obsolescence within the urban structure, and its potential as a sustainable and efficient response to urban development. The microdensification occurs in neighborhoods located around the city core. Its land userestrictions perpetuate them as low density residential areas. There are informal emergent processes, developed by the inhabitants, that increase the number of functional units per lot, incorporate complementary uses that enrich the mono-functional structure and rebuilding the community network, avoiding the population expulsion towards the suburbs. A phenomenological analysis will be performed, pointing out strengths and weaknesses of the microdensification. The role of emergent processes within the city -a complex, dynamic and self-organizing system- will be highlighted,in order to define analytical and operational criteria.
