Abstract

In the discussion about density and its role in contemporary city growth, there are few references to support decisions regarding the role that density plays in urban transformations, especially on the scale of proximity. This paper proposes that, in order to contribute to diversity, integration and sociability, it is necessary to resort to a re-conceptualization of density beyond its quantitative condition, tackling it from its qualitative condition that is, as a result of a multidimensional composition of the urban fabric´s spatial properties and in the scale where the relational essence of the city is manifested: the public space. It is analyzed the role of urban morphology and its relation to residential density on the scale of proximity, in the configuration of contemporary forms of urbanity in Greater Santiago.
