Abstract

Recently the discussion about urban qualities of the cities has become more frequent and among them the public space emerges as the main element in the debate. With it, an important concept appears, the urbanity, trying to identify how a city can be welcoming to its inhabitants and passers-by. Whereas the main public space consists of a set of streets, we propose to investigate the city from a question: Could the urban layout be an enabling agent of urbanity? Starting readings with various methodological approaches, we proposed to analyze Blumenau, capital city of Santa Catarina, to understand the role of urban design and its implications for the city. Analyzing the process of urban growth through the theory of space syntax, identify the city urbanity changed throughout history, setting a new dynamic of socio-spatial relationships and indicating the emergence of a possible "new center" for the city.
