Abstract

The expansion of cities during the twentieth century brought the emergence of new urban forms. To describe them and to establish comparisons, compactness and density have become two very functional values if used together, as Berghauser and Pont (2009) demonstrated. The development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and policies of open access to public data have enabled a systematic use of the large amounts of information required for studies of urban morphology. In this paper, cartography and data accessible online from the Spanish Cadastre are used to classify the different urban fabric of the periphery of the city of Murcia. The results show the evolution of urban forms.
