Abstract

The process of spatial structuring of the Metropolitan Area of Bogota has involved interurban changes in the last 20 years, which are expressed through the hierarchy and concentration transformations of the metropolitan towns; these changes could be explained by transport costs depending on commuting times as spatial interaction. This article seeks to identify, from the perspective of transport demand, some evidence on the role of the principal means of transport in the process of spatial structuring of the Metropolitan Area of Bogota. With the predominance of few means of transport and their low effect on reducing commuting times between Bogota and municipalities, the actual transport costs has increased with the passage of time and so they have been decisive in the process of spatial structuring of the region.
