The evolution of metropolitan areas has produced polycentric systems where the main concentration of economical activity is not more located in CBD. This process obligates to explore new methodologies to detect complex urban structures. Using information of Metropolitan Barcelona, in this paper a family of models designed to detect retail subcentres is implemented. Namely five parametric approaches are used: lineal, exponential, standard, gravity and double-log. Two are the source data used to detect subcentres: 1) employment retail density and, 2) local based shoppers. The main findings suggest that in a polycentric system like Barcelona the best model are the exponential and gravity.Downloads
