It’s long since, in the analysis of environment and space transformation, researchers have used
metaphors such as that of “regeneration”, a biological metaphor that evokes therapeutic
interventions as well. The aim of our contribution is to focus on the sense and meaning of
“regeneration” by referring to the specific processes of re-construction and re-interpretation that
have concerned Abruzzo in the last years, starting from April 2009 earthquake that destroyed
the city of L’Aquila.
The following paper will deal with the dichotomy “recovery versus reconstruction” through the
combining of the theoretical perspective of Maurice Halbwachs and the empirical research of
the social needs observed in the C.A.S.E. Project of Assergi (L’Aquila).
Then, by exploring the possible connection between territory recognition and regeneration, the
authors will refer to the process of re-interpretation of the bioclimatic, bio-constructive and antiseismic
built in earth houses, which are present in Abruzzo as well as in a number of other
Italian regions. The analysis of some space reevaluation and re-appropriation dynamics will give us the
opportunity to focus upon a different building dimension, between landscape and memory, that
wants to be proposed as a fundamental instrument for the amelioration of life.
