The aim of this paper is to think about the criteria of an integrated management strategy on coastal archaeological landscapes. We study a specific area, the lower basin of the Santa Lucia river (metropolitan area of Montevideo, Uruguay). There we have been developing an archaeological research, which has generated an important knowledge about pre-Hispanic populations of this region. The increase in recent years of economic development activities, mainly mining and urban growth, with no planned management of land uses, poses relevant conflicts which threaten the natural and cultural heritage conservation. Guidelines for action are proposed to guide interventions on the archaeological aspects of this area, aiming to promote a coordinated development and to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of heritage resourcesDownloads
