Abstract

This paper discusses the last public spaces created in Spanish cities after the 80`s. Its objective is to search for the criteria and patterns of intervention that would be the guidelines for the public spaces of the western city of the XXI century. This study analyses the appearance in Barcelona during the late XX century of a new school of public spaces linked to the new abstract trends based on the landscape as support, the fragmentation and renouncing of a representative public space, the incorporation of art, the exploration of iconic and metaphoric possibilities of space the experimentation with materials and the rethinking of the role of the vegetal elements.
