Abstract

The progressive construction of infrastructures for mobility and urban services has fragmented the city and the territory creating multiple obstacles and barriers. A new way of improving the contemporary metropolitan area is to open passages that overcome the physical and functional discontinuities and to favor the spaces connection and articulation in benefit of the urban continuity. In the case of Barcelona, the analysis of metropolitan barriers has allowed to visualize potential places for the improvement of urban and territorial connectivity and to develop the initiative for the Contest to open Passages convened in 2015 by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona and the Institut pour la ville en mouvement.
