Abstract

The Theory of Space Syntax (SST) aims to relate the built environment to the movement of people. Its main premise, defended as the Theory of Natural Movement (NM), is that the configuration of space directly influences not only the movement of people, but also the location of attractors (commerce, services, job offers) and vice versa. Although widely disseminated in academic and professional circles, there are still many problems in the processing and reading of analyses, resulting from issues in the construction of the input database, the so-called “axial maps”. Thus, the objective of this work is to provide a tutorial to support other researches, presenting a step-by-step guide from the correct design of axial lines to analysis processing. The selected area of study used was the Conurbada Area of Curitiba and the Integration and Choice analyzes were made, the most recurrent in the theory in relation to urban planning. In addition, some comparisons were made with data from the 2010 IBGE Census, such as density and income. The results corroborate the assumptions of NM: where there is a greater concentration of people, there are also better configurational properties. However, the relationship of these concentrations in relation to the system as a whole indicates that the Conurbated Area of Curitiba has segregation properties and that there is no urban accessibility for all social strata.
