Abstract

This article, stemming from research on border areas in Mato Grosso do Sul (BR), examines urban morphology and public space management in Bela Vista and Bella Vista Norte, border cities with Paraguay. Architectural production was analyzed, as well as the occupation of public space, focusing on the riverine areas of the Apa River, the de facto border. Through bibliographic review, field data collection, and analysis of satellite image fragments used for map-making, the study identifies different types and processes that have defined the evolution of the cities, resulting in the loss of character of historical buildings. Discrepancies in environmental management between the two countries were identified in the occupation of public space. As a result, it is crucial to implement appropriate urban policies and adopt an integrated and contextually adapted approach to the administration of border areas in order to prevent the cultural deterioration of the cities.
