Abstract

The Valdivia River Fair (Chile) is analyzed from an urban, landscape and architectural perspective, and it is argued that it is a significant example of an urban space for citizen encounters in southern Chile. From the urban point of view, the fair is highlighted as a central place of the city and the fluvial waterfront of the Calle-Calle and Valdivia rivers. It also analyzes the strong links of the fair with the surrounding landscape, both urban and natural. Architecturally, the analysis focuses on the fair as a large covered and open space, with multiple events and in permanent transformation. The space of the fair is analyzed as a large multicolored awning that generates a specific chromatic atmosphere, a colored public space that has marked the daily pulse of the city since time immemorial.
