Water is essential for any ecosystem. Rainwater runoff occurs in both natural and man-made environments. The water, therefore, also drains over the city. But how does this drainage occur? The water disappears under the streets through the sewer network. It becomes imperceptible. This article is the result of a research that aims to better understand the logic of water flow in highly urbanized territories. The research consists of the preparation and analysis of a cartography about the traces of water flow in the Barcelona metropolitan territory. The work methodology used consists in the preparation of a cartographic database using Geographical Information Systems and starting from the restitution of historical cartographies. The cartographies and the resulting story become a basis for responding to the new challenges of urban design in the metropolis resulting from the various crises we are experiencing.
