Abstract

Based on a phenomenological approach, this current communication seeks to showcase the experiences of an architectural project studio. Building on the potential found on the topic of affective atmospheres, freshman students were prompted to take notice on the effect architectural space can have on the state of mind of those influenced by it, a set of exercises were put forward in order to produce some intended affective states by manipulating various atmospheric components. Manufactured ‘visual experience boxes’, consisting of scenic scale representations, were proposed as an operational tool. These phenomenographies enabled the gathering of quantifiable information on the subjective experience of every student that had been visually exposed to the atmospheres produced inside the boxes, as well as intersubjective information on the correlation regarding the meanings given to each of these experiences, thus revealing the emotional relevance of the existing space between the architectural object and the viewer.
