Abstract

During the pandemic, confinement highlighted the importance of outdoor living spaces. To address social and environmental challenges, an intensive Service-Learning workshop was proposed to develop a prototype of a wooden balcony that could be installed on existing buildings. Learning through experimentation generates deep knowledge and motivates students, so the workshop was based on learning by building. To bring the reality of the profession closer to the classroom, the workshop was developed from the design phase to the execution phase and in collaboration with strategic companies in the sector, providing a complete vision of the processes involved. The media success of the workshop and its results generated knowledge transfer through the modification of existing local regulations related to construction and urban planning, and the workshop will be continued in future editions.
