Case Study and Research by Design in History and Theory of Architecture, Design and Arts

This paper presents a pedagogical experience in the course History and Thought of global creative practices (1400-2000 CE), introduced in 2023 for architecture, design and arts. It combined Case Study (CS) and Research by Design (RbD) blurring disciplinary and methodological boundaries as argued by Frayling (1993) and Roggema (2016). The CS on Gerrit Rietveld's Red and Blue Chair (1917-1923), enabled students to integreate historical, theoretical, and cultural knowledge across art, design, and architecture. Through RbD, this knowledge was projected, tested and reconfigured in the curatorial design of a hypothetical exhibition. The guiding question: Can a chair shape housing, the city, society, and culture in the twentieth century? framed design as inquiry and knowledge production, fostered reflection in and on action, consolidating critical analysis, evidence-based argumentation communication and meaningful and transformative learning outcomes.
