Exploring matter: Learning to think with the hands

Every project begins with an object made by hand. When designing, our hands act as tools that move between matter and thought, shaping ideas into something constructible. This paper presents a teaching experience developed in the first course on Architectural Design. The goal is to work with the immediacy and unquestionable presence of matter in a broad sense, discovering its spatial, sensorial, plastic, and constructive qualities. This practice is proposed as a form of research, articulation of procedures, and generation of proposals through the conception of spaces using models. The methodology used encourages careful observation, phenomenological experimentation, and collaborative work. After five years of application, the results show improvements in spatial awareness, creativity, and critical engagement in learning about architectural design.
