Abstract

The paper presents a teaching methodology for the introductory Architecture Design Studio at UIC Barcelona, implemented continuously since 2018–2019. The proposal stems from the fundamental question of what should be taught to students who face the design process for the first time. The response is articulated around the phenomenology of space and the construction of a basic architectural lexicon. Five spatial categories are defined—diaphragm, void, sequential space, intermediate space, and open space—which allow students to approach architecture through perceptual experience. The methodology combines theory, analysis of reference works, visits to buildings, and diagrammatic exercises, constituting an active and progressive learning process aligned with the Research by Design (RbD) approach.
