Abstract

The current diversity of resources found on the internet marks a shift in the process of generation of new contents by architecture. This also affects the ways of learning it. The concern of this research is to observe this shift and to test the educative potential of transforming based on existing models. The case study used is the project studio Espegel & Cánovas of Madrid’s School of Architecture, in the framework of which the design-research model based on the transformation of references is employed as a teaching methodology. The article suggests tree models for the classification of the distinct uses of references in the architectural production: use of a collection of elements as entity, reinterpretation of a single element and replication of an element in a new context. After this analysis, the operations of each category are detected and identified in the results registered by the teaching team.

Author Biographies

Arturo Blanco Herrero, Profesor asociado DPA, ETSAM, UPM

Arturo Blanco Herrero es arquitecto por la ETSA de Valladolid desde 1995. Posteriormente
realiza estudios de Filosofía en la Universidad de Valladolid y la UNED y estudios de
doctorado en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM), obteniendo
el titulo de doctor en 2015 leyendo su tesis en el DPA de la ETSAM y la Acreditación como
profesor Ayudante Doctor y Contratado Doctor en 2017.
Comienza su trabajo como docente es 2005, primero en la ESAYT de la UCJC y a partir de
2010 hasta la actualidad como profesor asociado de Proyectos Arquitectónicos en la ETSAM
y profesor colaborador en el Master de Proyectos Arquitectónicos Avanzados [MPAA] de la
Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, desde 2009.
Ha sido también profesor invitado en diferentes Universidades Europeas y Americanas.
Es cofundador desde 1998 hasta su disolución en 2012 de la oficina de arquitectura BmasC
arquitectos, obteniendo más de treinta distinciones en concursos de ideas.
Design Vanguard 2006 por la publicación Architectural Record del American Institute of
Architects, seleccionado entre los 10 arquitectos de mayor proyección mundial en el año
2006. Premio de Arquitectura de Castilla y León en tres convocatorias (2002, 2006 y 2009),
siendo finalista en otras siete ediciones. Tercero en el IV Premio ATEG 2004. Finalista en el
III Premio de Arquitectura ENOR 2007, en el I Premio de Arquitectura ARQAno 2008 y en el I
Premio de Arquitectura Vivir con Madera FAD 2008.
Desde 2014 codirige la oficina ABLM arquitectos obteniendo varios premios en concursos
de Ideas y en Obras construidas entre los que destaca el A+Awards Architizer 2018 y
el Architecture MasterPrize 2018 además de ser Finalista en la XV Bienal Española de
Arquitectura y Urbanismo.
Sus obras han sido recogidas en diferentes libros, monografías y revistas especializadas en
Europa, América y Asia. Exponiendose en diferentes ámbitos como la Bienal de Arquitectura
Española, FUCOAM (crudo 100%), el COACyLE, Matadero Madrid y en la AIA. Ha impartido
conferencias en diferentes Universidades y foros profesionales de Europa y América.
En la actualidad compagina su actividad profesional con la docente y la investigadora.
Miembro del Grupo GIVCO (Grupo de Investigación de Vivienda Colectiva) y del Grupo
de Innovación Educativa “Recursos para la Docencia del Proyecto de Arquitectura” (TRLab)
ambos de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

Christina Ioannou, student of Master of Advanced Architectural Projects and mentor in undergraduate course DPA, ETSAM, UPM

Christina Ioannou studied architecture in Greece (Democritus University of Thrace) and graduated with a Master degree in 2018. She is currently studying the Master of Advanced Architectural Projects of the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (ETSAM, UPM). In the context of her master studies, she participates in the teaching unit Espegel-Cánovas of the ETSAM, as a mentor.

Since her graduation she has collaborated with architectural studios in Cyprus (Daskalaki Papadopoulos Architects) and Greece (Makridis Associates), and, previous to that, she had also realized an internship program with Basurama Association (Madrid). In parallel with her academic and professional activity, she participated in international workshops and activities with subjects related to art and pubic space. She has also carried out curatorial and artistic installation projects in public spaces in collaboration with the NGO Urban Gorillas.

Her research interests revolve around environmental philosophy, ethics and aesthetics and their associations with the architectural contemporary practice.
